Before your naturalization interview, study for the English and civics test by using the free resources that are provided by USCIS to help you prepare.
English Test Overview:
- The English portion of the naturalization test evaluates your understanding of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking basic English.
- During your eligibility interview (Form N-400), a USCIS officer will assess your ability to speak and understand English.
- For the reading test, you’ll be asked to read one out of three sentences aloud correctly to demonstrate your reading skills.
- For the writing test, you’ll need to write one out of three sentences correctly to demonstrate your writing skills.
Civics Test (2008 version):
- The civics portion of the naturalization test is an oral test.
- The USCIS officer will ask you up to 10 questions from the list of 100 civics test questions.
- You must answer at least 6 questions correctly to pass the civics test.
Special Consideration for 65/20:
- If you’re 65 years old or older and have been a lawful permanent resident of the United States for 20 or more years, you have special considerations.
- You only need to study the 20 questions marked with an asterisk (*) and can take the naturalization test in your preferred language.
