Picture-Perfect Passport: U.S. Passport Photo Requirements

U.S. passport photo requirements are specific and must be followed precisely to ensure your passport application is accepted.

  1. Photo Size and Composition:
    • The photo must be 2 inches by 2 inches (51mm x 51mm) in size.
    • The head should be between 1 inch to 1 3/8 inches (25mm to 35mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
  2. Color and Lighting:
    • The photo should be in color and taken against a plain white or off-white background.
    • Lighting should be even to avoid shadows on the face.
  3. Facial Expression:
    • You should have a neutral facial expression with both eyes open.
    • A natural smile is allowed but avoid exaggerated expressions.
  4. Head Position:
    • Your head should be centered and facing the camera directly.
    • The head should cover about 50% of the photo’s height.
  5. Eye Position:
    • Your eyes should be positioned between 1 1/8 inches to 1 3/8 inches (28mm to 35mm) from the bottom of the photo.
  6. Glasses and Head Coverings:
    • Glasses are allowed but should not cause glare. Tinted glasses are not allowed.
    • Head coverings for religious or medical reasons are allowed, but the full face must be visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and from ear to ear.
  7. Attire:
    • Normal daily clothing is acceptable. Uniforms or clothing that looks like a uniform should be avoided.
  8. Quality:
    • The photo should be high-resolution and clear, with no retouching or editing that alters your appearance.
  9. Print Quality:
    • The photo should be printed on matte or glossy photo-quality paper.
    • The photo should not be digitally altered or retouched to change your appearance in any way.
