What I’ve learned from road trips

Road trips have a unique way of teaching us about the world, our own capabilities, and the rich tapestry of culture that exists across different states and countries. As someone who has embarked on road trips both in the United States and South Africa, I’ve come to appreciate the diverse landscapes, lifestyles, and camping traditions that make each journey an unforgettable adventure.

One of the most captivating aspects of road trips in the United States is the incredible diversity of culture and landscapes from state to state. Traveling from the bustling streets of New York City to the serene beauty of the Grand Canyon is a journey that unveils the remarkable contrast in American lifestyles and traditions. In the South, the slow drawl and hospitality are infectious, while the Pacific Northwest’s rugged landscapes and eco-conscious communities offer a different kind of charm. Road trips in the U.S. serve as a cultural odyssey through various regions, each with its own history, cuisine, and way of life.

Comparing American camping to South African camping is an eye-opening experience. In the U.S., camping is often associated with well-equipped campsites, amenities, and well-maintained national parks. South African camping, on the other hand, often involves more rugged and remote settings. Whether you’re pitching a tent in the Kruger National Park or exploring the wild beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains, South African camping is a closer communion with nature, often accompanied by the distant roars of lions or the haunting call of hyenas.

Moreover, South African camping traditions are deeply rooted in the culture of braai (barbecue) and communal gatherings. It’s common to share stories and meals with fellow campers around a campfire, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.

In both the U.S. and South Africa, road trips have taught me the value of flexibility, adaptability, and an open mind. Embracing the unexpected detours and diversions, I’ve learned that the journey itself is often more enriching than the destination.

Road trips are more than just a means of getting from one place to another: they’re a journey of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and the celebration of nature’s wonders. Whether you’re navigating the highways of America or the winding roads of South Africa, each road trip is a lesson in exploration, appreciation, and the beautiful diversity of our world.
